Dog Portraits
Photography Guide
Choosing the right photo is a vital first step in the commission process.
The photo you choose will greatly influence the accuracy and overall quality of your completed portrait, so it is important to give it some real thought.
A few things to keep in mind:
Quality - if possible, use a camera or a high-quality phone camera to take the photo. The clearer the photo is, the more detailed your finished portrait will be.
Angle - the best drawings are created when working from photos taken at eye level as it will ensure proportions are realistic and the position is natural. I would also highly recommend capturing your dog either straight-on or in profile.
Character - think carefully about how you would like the drawing to portray your dog. Consider its facial expression (particularly the eyes) and its standing/sitting position. Ideal photographs are snapped when a dog is natural and alert.
Lighting & Environment - where possible, outdoor lighting is best. It is also worth considering your dog's surroundings and environment (even if they will not be included in the final piece).
I know it can be a challenge snapping the perfect shot and some models are more willing than others! However, I am here to help - please do get in touch for more advice, and feel free to send a collection of photos so we can discuss them together.
